Tristan Wilson presses Westerners' Sawyer Drent during Wolverine Boys 1A district quarterfinals basketball action held in Paullina Thursday night against Akron-Westfield.

Nothing like a good dose of defense to get a team off on the right track come tournament time. That was the case for South O'Brien as the Wolverines held Akron-Westfield to seven first-quarter points and eventually claimed a 73-29 win in a Class 1A District 1 quarterfinal game played February 20 at Paullina.

South O'Brien improved to 19-3 on the season and was to play Kingsley-Pierson Tuesday night at Paullina in District semifinal action. The District final is scheduled for Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Sioux Center.

The Wolverines were geared for action and led Akron-Westfield 31-7 after one quarter. "We started the game very intense on the defensive end with good full and half-court pressure," remarked South O'Brien head coach Kiley Yates. "We lost some intensity in the second quarter and they outscored us. I thought we re-established our control of the game in the third quarter and were able to come out with a solid victory. We were able to play 15 players which is always positive. We are very happy with the win as we advance along the tournament trail."

With 18 points against the Westerners, Jackson Louscher became South O'Brien's all-time leading scorer. The game concluded with Louscher at 1475 points and counting. Adam Paulsen totaled 1458 points starring for the Wolverines from 2008-12.
