On January 30th, South O'Brien senior and FFA member, Austin Paulsen, competed in a national welding competition that took place at the Missouri Welding Institute in Nevada, Missouri. 198 welders from ten different states participated in this contest. Austin was the only person from our area to compete. The contest consisted of three weldments (a part created from an assembly of smaller components that are joined by welding). Each competitor was given blueprints to follow and were required to use the SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) process.

Austin finished an outstanding 7th place and received a $1000 scholarship along with a trophy. "It was an overall good experience for me, and it was fun to be able to compete against others my age.  I learned a lot from talking to their instructors in the short amount of time that I was there," Austin commented.

Paulsen plans to attend the Missouri Welding Institute for their Master Pipe Welding and Fitting programs. "After achieving a diploma and hopefully my 6G and 6G Restriction AWS Certifications, I am planning on pursuing a career as a traveling pipeline welder." Austin then plans on moving back somewhere close to home to start his own welding and fabrication shop. He doesn't plan on competing in anymore welding competitions, but if one interests him, he might look into it.
