Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program available to Iowans

January 30, 2020

SHELDON, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach Human Sciences Specialist in Family Finance Jan Monahan reminds individuals that tax season is upon us and assistance is available.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program continues to be an important opportunity for many Iowans, according to Monahan.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation and electronic filing for low to moderate income Iowans. Certified community volunteers prepare taxes with computer software and help with special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

“Many individuals eligible are unaware of the VITA program and do not realize that they may save by seeking help from free tax preparation services at VITA sites,” Monahan said. “The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.”

Monahan reminds individuals in Northwest Iowa that the closest VITA tax sites are located at:
