South O'Brien High School's Jazz Ensemble competed in its first competition on January 9. Director Jared Lancaster, along with the seventeen member ensemble, attended Triton Jazz Festival in Fort Dodge at Iowa Central Community college.  The jazz band will also be playing at the IHSMA (Iowa High School Music Association) Jazz Festival in Spirit Lake on January 27.

The ensemble has prepared three songs for their competition set: "Hit and Run" by Larry Barton, "Angel Eyes" arranged for jazz band by Dave Burduhn, and "The Defibrillator" by Adrien Re. Landcaster said, "When I started picking music for the Jazz Band, I started with 'Angel Eyes' and 'The Defibrillator,' and finding 'Hit and Run' was a happy little accident."

The band will have additional competitions at Morningside College in Sioux City on February 6 and Northwest Iowa Bandmasters Association in Le Mars on February 17, as well as a Jazz Concert at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina on March 16.
