South O'Brien embarked on the 2020 portion of its season with a War Eagle Conference road game at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The first half decided nothing as the teams battled to a tie, but the visiting Wolverines owned the second half and came away with a 70-46 victory January 3 at hartley. With the win, South O'Brien improved to 3-1 in the conference and 6-2 on the season.

Jackson Louscher was the high man for the Wolverines with 27 points. Tristan Wilson turned in a strong first half and finished with 16 points. Caden Hale contributed eight points, Alex Presthus six, Zeke Lundquist five, Josh Johannsen four, and Case Moermond and Jale Wallin two each.

Louscher dished for three assists and Lundquist made four steals. The Hawks have good size but South O'Brien still had the upper hand on the boards 33-22. Leading the way were Wilson and Moermond with six rebounds apiece. Grabbing five caroms each were Louscher and Lundquist with Hale adding another four.

The Wolverines took advantage of a free throw edge, going to the line 17 times and making 13. HMS was 4-for-7 at the stripe. From the floor, South O'Brien shot 27-of-59 for 46 percent. The Hawks finished at 40 percent, making 19 of their 47 field goal tries.
