Santa visits with a young lady at the Upper Des Moines Opportunity office in Primghar on December 18.

Santa came to visit Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons December 17 & 18. Over the course of the day he visited with about 20 children. He heard about the good things they do, and about what they are hoping he will bring to the good girls and boys. Santa visited the office of Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO).

Upper Des Moines Opportunity is an organization that operates a food bank, assists families with LIHEAP (heating assistance) and weatherization, the only federal programs the organization offers, Adopt-A-Family and a variety of other programs.

In recent weeks, the food bank shelves were empty. Various food drives by schools, churches, individuals and organizations such as Boy Scouts or FFA have rung the bell and lots of food has flooded the shelves of the food bank in Primghar operated by UDMO.

Dozens of families came to receive the gifts provided by generous donors throughout O'Brien County. Food and basic paper and personal care goods were also offered to clients. Food boxes and gifts are prepared by staff (Brenda Collier) and volunteers.

UDMO, a Community Action Agency, is funded primarily by donations with some government assistance, and operated with tremendous volunteers. Clients apply for assistance and must meet certain financial guidelines. Applications are available at the office, 140 2nd Street SE in Primghar. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 712-957-1023. Office hours are 8:30 – 4:00pm Monday – Friday and closed for lunch from 12:00 – 12:30.
