PRIMGHAR, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach invites area residents to join them for a two-session retirement preparation workshop on Thursday, Jan. 9 and Thursday, Jan. 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Northwest Iowa Community College, Building A, Room 122 in Sheldon.

The “Writing Your Retirement Paycheck” workshop is ideal for those looking to retire within the next 10 years. It is designed to provide people approaching retirement with the information they need to be prepared to “write their own paycheck.” The workshop outlines key factors to consider prior to retirement and describes strategies for structuring retirement income.

“For many of us, our paychecks have been determined by someone else all our lives,” said Jan Monahan, human sciences specialist in family finance with ISU Extension and Outreach. “But in retirement, many of us are responsible to write our own paycheck. How will we know how big it should be?”

According to Monahan, who will lead the workshop, topics include health costs, Social Security, inflation, required minimum distributions, annuities and more.

“Individuals need to make their own decisions about retirement,” Monahan said. “But clear and non-commercial information is a necessary ingredient for decision-making, and that is what will be provided in these two sessions.”

Monahan points out that even those who work with a trusted financial professional must ultimately make the decision themselves. A financial professional can suggest or recommend strategies or products, but it is the consumer who decides and then lives with the result.

There is a one-time fee of $5 to participate in this program which can be paid at the door on Jan. 9. Pre-registration is requested by Jan. 7 to plan adequately for materials and a light supper. Pre-register by calling 712-957-5045 or via email to xobrien@iastate.edu. A light meal will be provided each evening.

Questions can be directed to the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Primghar by stopping in, calling 712-957-5045 or emailing xobrien@iastate.edu.
