Veterans salute the flag during the National Anthem at the high school gym in Paullina.

South O'Brien 7-12 students gathered with Zion St. John students to celebrate Veterans Day with an assembly on November 11. The assembly opened with the presentation of the colors, "The National Anthem," and "The Pledge of Allegiance."

The Legion auxiliary members then presented flags to the fourth-grade students from Zion. While the Zion students received flags, the choir, directed by John Krager, sang "In Flanders Fields."

A slide show of area veterans played while the band, directed by Jarod Lancaster, performed "America the Beautiful" and "National Emblem." After the slideshow, South O'Brien Superintendent Dan Moore addressed the audience, asking what sacrifice, courage, honor, and loyalty meant to them. Legion member Denny Koehlmoos offered closing comments before the retirement of the colors.
