Shoulder Work on L48

October 31, 2019

L48 from B40 to Highway 10 was resurfaced 2 years ago. The shoulders were worked on and seeded. The shoulders have never firmed up. They are soft the entire blacktop-to-blacktop stretch. That is about to change.

A rented shouldering machine is coming in the first week in November. County road crews use it to cut 4 inches from the shoulder surface. Four inches of gravel be poured into the shoulders to bring it level with the roadbed.

The 10-mile stretch will be closed to through traffic while crews are repairing the shoulder surface. It is advisable to find an alternate route.

O’Brien County Engineer Scott Rinehart can’t give a time frame. He says much will depend on weather conditions, how well the rented machine performs and how long it takes county crews to become familiar with how the machine performs.
