Dean C. Schmidt, 74, of rural Meriden, Iowa, passed away Saturday Morning, August 17, 2019 in the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 21st, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jonathan Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Township Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa with military rites L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Dean was born on May 31, 1945 at LeMars, Iowa to Melvin & Alice (Puhrmann) Schmidt. He graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn High School in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 until 1967, being stationed overseas in Vietnam from 1966 until he was honorably discharged in 1967. Dean was married to Donnia Petersen on January 18, 1969 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa.

Dean had farmed most of his life and also worked for Pauling and Mogensen Construction for many years. He had served as a Cherokee County Supervisor for 8 years. He was currently working for the Cherokee County Zoning Commission. He was a longtime Liberty Township Trustee. He was an elder and member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee where he had also served on various church boards over the years. He belonged to L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. in Cherokee. Dean was the family construction consultant. He loved watching birds while sitting outside on his deck at the farm. He had been a resident of rural Meriden the past 41 years and prior to this had been a resident of the Cleghorn area for 9 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Alice Schmidt, his in-laws Emil and Leona Petersen, brother-in-law Doyle Ames, sister-in-law Jan Petersen, and a great nephew Cameron Fabritz.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donnia; two daughters: Deb (Dave) Merten of Storm Lake, Iowa; Darcy (Brad) Wurth of LeMars, Iowa; four grandchildren: Austin and Dylan Wurth of LeMars, Iowa, Logan and Jenna Merten of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister Phyllis Ames of Meriden, Iowa; sister-in-law Marylis Petersen of Paullina, Iowa; brother-in-law Marvin Petersen of Paullina, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Denny and Lori Petersen of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
