20 years ago - 1999

Three slots open on City Council - The terms of three members of the Sutherland City Council will be open for election this year. The positions of Brad Thorn, Alan Mills and Norman Hill are those up for election. The first day for candidates to file nomination petitions with the City Clerk is Monday, August 23, 1999. The clerk will be in the office for regular business hours to give out nomination petitions. Unlike other small towns in the area, Sutherland citizens are always ready and willing to serve on the City Council and give the rest of the community a choice come Election Day

Kid's Club organizing - Adults in charge of the United Methodist Church vacation Bible school had such a good time, they are starting a Kid's Club here in Sutherland. The Club will meet on Thursdays after school each week that school is in session. The Club will meet at the United Methodist Church for a snack, a lesson and a craft and singing together. The time will be from 4:00 to 5:30. All children age 4 through sixth grade in the community are welcome! The Kid's Club plans to meet the first week of school, August 26. Join in this new adventure!

Hill finishes city clerk professional training - Betty Hill of Sutherland completed the final session of a threepart curriculum in city management recently at Iowa State University. The five-day program was conducted by ISU

Extension July 12-16 in Ames. Advanced topics offered in this session included performance appraisal, negotiation skills for public officials, coping with controversy, community design and landscape design and fire and emergency services.

Grand Marshall nominations wanted! - Sutherland is again planning a Labor Day Celebration beginning with a parade. Who do you feel should be Grand Marshall of the Labor Day Parade? Please send a letter to the Sutherland Courier stating why you think your nomination should be Grand Marshall. Please be thorough and specific. The winner will be determined from the information received in your letter. Nomination letters are due to the Courier.

Annual Labor Day Celebration in Sutherland - Sutherland's annual Labor Day celebration will be held September 3 and 4.

TO HOLD BABY & PET SHOW - Millies Rest Home will be having a baby and pet show on Friday, August 25th. Anyone that has a baby, 0-2 yrs. of age is welcome to stop out in the morning, from 9:30 to 11:00 to show off their precious little bundle. We also will be having our annual pet show that afternoon at 2:00. We're hoping everyone will be able to bring out their special pet whether it be big or small or unusual. Everyone is welcome. Lemonade and cookies will be served.

Tug-of-War Teams Prepare For Labor Day - Get your tug-of-war teams lined up for the Labor Day celebration. Men and women's teams will be pulling on Labor Day at the city park. Tug-of-war teams can be no heavier than 1,500 pounds or consist of more than 12 people. Teams will be weighed in at the Sutherland Co-op between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. on Labor Day. Baseball-Softball Fund Raising Project Selected By Sutherland Jaycee Ettes - The family portrait fund drive is a feature of Midwest Portraits Corp. The pre-sale of coupons entitles each family to one 8 " x 10" portrait .

Additional portraits may be purchased, if desired. Eleven poses are taken and you choose one for your coupon special at the proof showing. Special shots such as silhouettes or special back lighting may be requested at no extra charge. Pictures are mailed to you with satisfaction guaranteed or Midwest Portraits will refund your money. The $6.00 coupons are on sale from all members of Sutherland Jaycee Ettes. Proceeds are going to the Baseball field and Softball field improvement fund . A town canvass is planned for Friday evening, Aug. 17. Band Mothers To Meet - There will be a band mothers meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 4:00 p.m. in the high school band room.
