Woodbury Central eliminates Wolverines in district tourney

First baseman Josh Johannsen steps on the bag to retire Woodbury Central batter Dallas Kluender.

Woodbury Central proved to be inhospitable hosts. The Wildcats scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to down South O'Brien 12-2 in the opening round of the Class 1A District 2 Baseball tournament July 13 at Moville. With the five-inning loss, the Wolverines finish the season at 4-17.

Reid Nelson stroked a double in the tourney loss to Woodbury Central.

South O'Brien was guilty of several errors in the field and eight of the Wildcat runs were unearned. Also, half of the six batters walked by the Wolverines came around to score. Case Moermond got the pitching start and went 2-1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits and the 12 runs with six walks and three strikeouts. Senior Taylor Steffens pitched 1-2/3 innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out two in his last game as a Wolverine.

South O'Brien scored its two runs in the third inning. Wilson Millan led off with a single and went to third on a base hit by Micah Davis. Davis then stole second. A wild pitch scored Millan and moved Davis to third. With two outs, Josh Johannsen hit a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop, allowing Davis to score.

The Wolverines had three other hits in the game. In the second inning, Moermond singled and Reid Nelson hit a double. Moermond was out at the plate for the third out of that inning. The final hit, a single, came from Kadyn Steffens in the fourth.
