Lady Wolverines take see-saw affair over Remsen St. Mary's

South O'Brien scored late to pull out a 6-4 victory over Remsen St. Mary's. The War Eagle Conference classic played out June 10 at Paullina. "Tonight was a great game to be a part of!" exclaimed winning coach Heather Struve. "Both teams came to play and were hitting the ball."

The Hawks jumped out in the first inning with an unearned run on an error and then two base hits. South O'Brien bounced right back with a run of their own when Sydney Struve and Taryn Hintz hit back-to-back doubles.

Neither team scored again until the fifth inning. St. Mary's got a run off of two walks, a single and another walk. The Wolverines responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Skye Rehder drew a walk, Hannah Dau sacrifice bunted her to second, and Rehder scored on a fly ball to center field by Struve that was misplayed. Struve made it to third on the dropped ball and Hintz brought her home on a squeeze bunt on the next pitch. The score was now 3-2 in favor of the Wolverines.

In the top of the sixth, the Hawks drew a walk, then had an infield fly for the first out, drew another walk, and then had a girl hit a double to plate two runs and take over the lead at 4-3. The Wolverines would not stop though, and added three more runs to their score in the bottom of the inning. Anna Friedrichsen had a lead off single, followed by a sac bunt by Kaylee Jacobs and a ground out by Rehder to put Friedrichsen at third base with the tying run. Dau then doubled to send in Friedrichsen and Struve hit a single to bring in Dau. Hintz drew an intentional walk and Jordan Nieuwenhuis hit a base hit to score Struve.

It was just a back-and-forth affair the whole night, with neither team taking a commanding lead. St. Mary's had runners at first and second when Jacobs caught a line drive in center field for the last out of the game.

Bailey Tjossem pitched the first five innings of play and gave up four hits, two runs (one earned), struck out four and walked six. Struve came in to pitch the final two innings and got the win, allowing three hits, two earned runs, striking out three and walking four.

"Both pitched well, but we need to cut down on the walks or at least not bunch up the walks," said Coach Struve. "Three of the RSM scores came off of girls who walked and the other run was from a runner getting on by a Wolverine error. It wasn't our sharpest we have looked in the field, but it was probably one of the games where we have actually had to make a lot of defensive plays."

Hintz, Struve, and Friedrichsen each had a double and a single to lead in the hitting department. Struve also scored three times and had two RBI's. Hintz had two RBI's as well. Friedrichsen scored a run and Gabby Heeren had a pair of singles. "We had a sense of confidence every time we went to the plate tonight," stated the coach. "That comes from experience. This group has high expectations of themselves."
