O'Brien County's Bell-Times-Courier -

From My View

Cobblestone Days in Primghar went off well for the community, plenty of people and plenty of fun for all, even with the short rainfall. I did find one thing a bit disconcerting, and that was in the parade, or to be a bit more precise the Paullina float that was part of the parade. I was not aware Paullina was being marketed as "The Best Bedroom Community". As a matter of fact I spent some time online doing a little research and given what I found I could not square Paullina with the description of a "Bedroom community".

Paullina is so much more than a "Bedroom Community". Paullina is home to employers such as Mill Creek Machining, First Cooperative Association, Bunkers Feed and Supply and AgriVision. Quite a few trucking companies call Paullina home along with many area contractors. Paullina is also home to two schools and numerous childcare providers. On the service side Paullina can boast of banking, accounting, legal, insurance agencies, printing services, a newspaper and several auto repair businesses. Paullina has two medical clinics, a dentist, a chiropractor, an optometrist and a drug store. Other amenities include several beauty salons, a grocery store, a hardware store and a lumberyard. There is also an antique store, a sewing supply store, two restaurants, an architectural salvage and sales company, an auto sales company and others I am sure I have overlooked. Recent additions to the community include Dollar General and a newly remodeled and expanded Casey's, both of which are recognized by most people and each have easy access.

The city is aggressively pursuing other businesses with the opening of a second industrial park. Both are open to future expansion. Paullina also has a housing development with lots available. The city is also home to the Paullina Public Library which offers much more than books to the public, a very nice city park and the Swanson sports complex..

Paullina has a well trained and equipped volunteer fire department and ambulance staff, here I might add volunteers are always needed for both. A professional full time police department protects the community. There are many other hard working city employees.

A wonderful county park with camping, swimming and fishing is only two minutes down the road, just past the golf course (yes, I cannot forget that). Nor can I fail to mention our airport.

In my opinion, Paullina is much more than a "Bedroom Community". Labeling Paullina in such a way shows a misguided attempt at marketing Paullina, given assets Pauillina possesses. Do not sell Paullina short.

Getting back to Cobblestone Days in Primghar. It was a wonderful couple of days, well attended and well planned. I would like to say thank you to all the volunteers that helped to make it a huge success. "Thank you!"
