South O'Brien girls golf in Regional Finals

The Wolverine Girls Golf Team faced a variety of challenges at the Regional Final Meet at Britt on Monday, May 20. Going in, the Wolverines knew they had to have a good day as a team if they wanted to place in the top two to make it to State. They faced some familiar competition, such as Alta-Aurelia and Sioux Central, whom they faced just a week earlier. As a team, the Wolverines showed some grit facing some wet, cold, and windy conditions. They came in with a 407. However, it just wasn't good enough for a bid to the State Tournament. They placed fourth behind Bishop Garrigan (Algona), Alta-Aurelia, and North Union.

Junior Rachel Sohn, who has been an incredible leader all season in the #1 spot, shot a 95 and placed eighth. Although she put together a great front nine, she struggled on the back and missed the cut to compete individually at the State Meet by just one stroke. Although it was a disappointment, she will use it as motivation to work on her game this summer and come back even stronger next season.

Juniors Shara Wallin and Kaidee Weber have been assets to the team this season as well. Shara placed 16th with a 103, and Kaidee placed 19th with a 103. Sophomore Kaeley Einck shot a 105 (23rd), junior Jenna Cosby shot a 108 (28th), and Jillian Heemstra shot a 120 (39th). As evidenced by their scores, the girls are pretty competitive amongst themselves.

I am proud of how each of the girls has grown and improved this season, especially in handling the mental challenges the game of golf has to offer.

Although we fell short of our goal to qualify for State, all 6 girls will return next year. It's pretty clear they have something to prove. Their offseason practice and play will set the tone for the 2020 season.
