South O'Brien Model United Nations

April 18, 2019

Model UN members Molly Lenz, Yannick Lorf, Nikki Feltman, Richard Nyunt, and Katrina McMorris prepare their arguments before they begin.

Six South O'Brien students went to UNI in Cedar Falls to participate in Model United Nations on April 4-5. Students simulate the United Nations by proposing and voting on laws that their assigned country would possibly vote for in the real United Nations. This year, South O'Brien represented Afghanistan.

Seniors Richard Nyunt, Molly Lenz, Nicole Feltman; junior Yannick Lorf; sophomore Aiden Rehder; and freshman Katrina McMorris participated. Lenz was a part of the Political and Security Committee. Feltman was on the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee. Nyunt and McMorris teamed up to work on the Disarmament Committee. Lorf was on the Economic and Social Council. Lastly, Rehder was on the Legal Committee.

Model UN Advisor Mary Helfter said, "Participation in Model UN gives students the opportunity to experience the frustrations and successes of working with people representing different cultures while learning about issues that affect everyone on the planet." This is Helter's 27th year as a Model UN advisor.
