Jazz Band And Choir Pre-State Concert Held
March 21, 2019
The South O'Brien Junior and Senior High School Jazz Bands and the South O'Brien High School Jazz Choir held their annual pre-state concert at First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. The concert was held Monday evening, March 18.
Band Director Brian Cole arranged for an appearance and clinic with Mike Vax. Vax is a Warburton International Artist and recording artist with Summit Records. His performance was made possible by the support of First National bank, Primghar; Iowa State bank, Paullina; Savings bank, Primghar; and Security State bank, Paullina and Sutherland.
The high school band held a public rehearsal with Mr. Vax for a later performance of a piece written some 40 years ago for Mr. Vax. At the end of that piece Mr. Vax complemented the South O'Brien students' musical skill, even saying they the week or 2 that they have had to prepare that arrangement is a very short time in comparison to some bands he has worked with. He also emphasized that "Jazz" is the only truly American art form stating, "It was invented in the United States."
The junior high school band played three songs for the full house. They performed "Flight of the Foo Birds," "Embraceable You," and "Wild Card Shuffle." The Jazz Choir sang three pieces: "Autumn Leaves," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "How High the Moon".
The High School Band performed five pieces: "Cole Minor Blues," "Love Matters the Most," "San Miguel," "What a Wonderful World," (Mr. Vax participated with this piece and was worked on during the public rehearsal); and "Work Song". "Work Song" featured duets from three of the siblings pairs in the band.
The South O'Brien Jazz Band will compete at the Iowa State Jazz Competition in Ames on Tuesday April 2. Their first performance is scheduled for 1:15pm. Fifteen Class 1A Jazz Bands were invited to compete. The Class 1A finals are scheduled for 7:00 and 7:27 pm.
