Sutherland Council Approves Proposed Budget

A Public Hearing to adopt the 2019-2020 fiscal year budget beginning July 1, 2019 received no public comments at the hearing held Monday March 4. Overall the city asking is $1,048,412 down from the current estimated budget that ends June 30, 2019. The anticipated spending is $1,180,389. The levy for the 2020 budget is $12.65258 per $1000 of property valuation. City Clerk Amanda Vanderhoff says the greatest savings is seen in the employee benefits levy. The city will not be need to levy for that line item. That fund has a current fund balance to use.

The council also approved Ordinance 2019-001, which amends the city Refuse Collection Contract with Town and Country Disposal. The amendment increases the garbage and recycling collection fees from $42.00 per quarter to $48.00 per quarter. The new rate takes effect April 1, 2019 and the first billing cycle in which it will be imposed is the 3rd quarter 2019, July – September 2019. The new recycle containers are expected to arrive at Sutherland near the end of March. Town and Country will distribute them to the residences.

Tom Gonnerman represented Saddle Club. He gave an update of the group's activities during 2018 noting that rain was a problem. He also gave an overview of plans for the 2019 season. A remarkable outcome of other club changes made in 2018 over 2017 is a growth in membership. He said that in that time period the group's membership grew from 23 to 60 with more youth involved.

Corey Zimmer, Sutherland Public Works Manager reported an increase in water usage. The city used about 2.3 million gallons of water with about 7.2 million going to the sewer. The water use is an increase of about 1600 gallons per day at a cost to the city of about $40 per day. A search is on for where the leak is.

Spring cleanup day was set for Saturday April 27th with the Household Hazardous Material trailer to come Friday April 26th. It will be located at the city shed parking lot.
