O'Brien County Fair Upgrades and Loss

February 7, 2019

Darwin Gaudian presented an annual update to the O’Brien County Supervisors on Tuesday January 22. He explained to the board the 2019 plan by the Fair Board to build a covered stage next to the Open Class Exhibit building. The concrete pad serves as the venue for a variety of Fair activities including the Royalty selection, fashion show, talent show and more recently the entertainment events.

Gaudian informed the board that a 60’x60’ roof will be an excellent addition, protecting audience and performers alike from direct sun as well as inclement weather. They are also looking to add an additional bleacher section.

The Fair Board’s budget request for the county remained constant at $37,900.

Board member changes were also announced to the board. Gaudian noted that this year he is losing approximately 100 years of Board member experience. Retiring from the board are Dennis Mars, Bob Steinkamp and longtime secretary/treasurer Sherry Durst. They are being replaced by Michael Wagner, Cole Gable and Jill Vander Veen is taking the secretary/treasurer position. Sherry has agreed to stay on for a year to assist Vander Veen with the transition.

There is also some interest in a slice of property from Primghar Action Committee extending the industrial park to the south. Gaudian said the surrounding property is getting some other looks from the fair board as well for pit expansion for the Jaycees Figure 8 races and possibly for the camping pads, although nothing is firm.
