SOHS Girls Youth Tournament held Jan. 5
January 17, 2019
South O'Brien has held a youth Basketball tournament for boys and girls grades 5-8 for almost 30 years. The first individuals to organize the tournaments were science teacher and coach Kevin Brasser and previous school counselor Dave Schroeder.
South O'Brien students and alumni took their time to help run the SOS Girls Youth Tournament on January 5. Volunteers were able to choose from officiating, keeping the scorebook, and running the concessions. Erica Dreckman, girls varsity Basketball coach, took over the role of organizing the tournament and scheduling workers. With a new face running the tournament there were things to get familiar with, "The biggest challenge of running the tournament was to make sure we did not forget anything. Having volunteers helped with that." Jim Wagner was tasked with putting the officiating schedules together along with coaching the 6th graders.
With the help of thirty plus high school athletes and alumni, each tournament raises around $2,000-$3,000 for the Athletic Boosters. The tournament was a success with the help of boys and girls Basketball players, alumni, and people in the community.
