Iowa State Dance Championships are right around the corner, and the South O'Brien Dance Team has been preparing for the annual competition. The squad will travel to Des Moines November 29-30 to compete. First-year Coach Jessica Mattheis and her team of 12 will be compete in three categories this year: pom, hip hop, and novelty.

This is the first year South O'Brien will compete in the novelty category. A novelty dance is a routine that uses popular songs and props. It usually tells a story, and it is a fun, upbeat routine. The theme of South O'Brien's routine is "80's workout."

According to Mattheis, the team has worked hard to perfect the routines, practicing every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning from 6:00 to 7:30 am.

All routines will be performed on Thursday, November 29. The squad will perform their pom routine at 8:59 am in Hy-Vee Hall. Novelty will be also performed in Hy-Vee Hall at 2:10 pm, and the hip hop performance will be at 3:45 pm at Wells Fargo Arena.

Coach Mattheis has high hopes for the team. She said, "I feel very confident about the routines we are bringing to competition. I am also confident in the team."
