Seed Collecting at Prairie Heritage Center

October 18, 2018

On Thursday, October 12, the Prairie Heritage Center hosted a seed-collecting event. Those who attended were given time to peruse the prairie for seeds. The seeds were collected in order to be planted and dispersed during a springtime event at the Peterson Heritage Center. According to naturalist, Charlene Elyea, spots where the healthiest prairie resides are the areas that are close to railroad tracks. The rail cars would spark during travel and ignite the prairie grass and leave that area more fertile for new seeds and replenish the growth and keep competition for the new seeds to a minimum.
