Paul Paulsen brings the first load of beans to Bunkers Feed & Supply in Paullina.

Just as harvest 2018 begins, so do operations at Bunkers Feed & Supply elevator at Paullina. The development of additional storage capacity for corn and beans by Bunkers Feed & Supply of Granville began in spring 2018 and now is accepting crops. The first truckload of beans was delivered by Paul Paulsen of Paullina on Tuesday September 25.

Two bins stand on the site of Paullina's West Industrial Park. The west bin is 90 feet in diameter and has a 550,000 bushels capacity. The other was built to holdup to 750,000 bushels. Its diameter is 105 feet. The project takes 7 acres. The elevator can take wet corn. If necessary, Curt Bunkers says they can truck grain to the Granville operation.

The first load of beans falls into the pit to be conveyed into the elevator from underground.

Bunkers worked with City of Paullina officials to build the elevator. Electric capacity was added by the City to accommodate the new increased demand without interfering with any existing customers. The City of Paullina owns its electric utility. A development agreement was reached between the parties setting a minimum assessment to the new development and 1 fulltime job in Paullina and 9 fulltime jobs in Granville. The city will provide necessary infrastructure. The Paullina City Council just recently approved selling general obligation bonds up to $600,000 to cover the costs of the electric upgrades, sewer and hopes to include streets.

Talks are underway between the City of Paullina and Black Hills Energy to expand natural gas delivery throughout the city particularly to the industrial park. Council is currently conducting readings of the ordinance change to grant a new 25-year franchise to BHE in exchange for building the pipeline that will provide the natural gas service. A Public Hearing was held Monday October 1, 2018 on the matter. At press time, the city had not received any written public comments in advance of the public hearing.
