Wolverine Football Back on Track

September 27, 2018

The Wolverines hosted the HMS Hawks Friday night for homecoming. After dropping 3 games in a row the Wolverines picked up a big win against a good Football team. The Hawks had been scoring a huge amount of points this season .

The game started with a bang for the Hawks as they went 73 yards in 5 plays to put the first touchdown on the score board with 10:37 to go in the 1st quarter. The two point conversion failed and the Hawks led 6-0. We knew they could put points on the board quickly and they proved that right away.

The Wolverines were forced to punt on the first drive of the game. The Defense then stepped up and forced the first turnover of the game. Thomas Nelson recovered a poor pitch by the Hawk offense and the Wolverine offense went to work. The home team tied up the score with 2:17 to go in the first quarter. Tristan Wilson rattled of a 43 yard run and Yannick Lorf added the extra point kick to put the Wolverines up 7-6.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair by both teams. Neither offense could get on track. The Wolverines drove down inside the 20 one time but a fumbled snap ended the drive. HMS had an opportunity right before half after a short punt that was almost blocked but the defense held and the score remained 7-6 at half time.

The Wolverines received the opening kick of the second half. After a 12 play drive the Wolverines punched it in the endzone on a 6 yard run by Riley Davis. The extra point kick by Yannick Lorf was blocked and the Wolverines led 13-6 at the 6:03 mark in the 3rd quarter.

The Wolverine defense forced a punt on the following drive but a well punted ball gave the Wolverines the ball on the 1 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage the Wolverines fumbled the ball in the endzone and HMS covered it up for a touchdown. Their extra point kick was good and the score was tied with 1:33 to go in the 3rd quarter.

The teams went back and forth for the balance of the third quarter and first part of the 4th. Both team’s defenses came up with big plays to force the offenses off the field . With 5:20 to go the Wolverines got the ball back on a fumble recovery by Noah Fuhrman. The Wolverines put together a great drive that ended with a 7 yard run by Sean Negus for a touchdown. The score came with :39 to go in the fourth quarter. Yannick Lorf kicked the extra point and put the Wolverines up 20-13.

The Hawks last attempt ended on a fumble recovery by Jeremy Struve. In the end the Wolverines recovered 5 fumbles. Thomas Nelson who also had 1.5 sacks. Caden Hale who also had 3 solo tackles and 1 assist. Sean Negus finished with 2 solos and 6 assists. Noah Fuhrman who had 4 solos and 8 assists and Jeremy Struve who had 2 solos and 2 assists.

Offensively, Tristan Wilson led the way with 22 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown. Riley Davis had 13 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown and Sean Negus had 11 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown. The Wolverines did a great job playing as a team Friday. We had a lot of players contribute in a great victory.

Next week the Wolverines travel to MMCRU. This is an important game as the Wolverines need to keep improving. We need to clean up our center/ quarterback exchanges and really get more consistency out of our offensive and defensive lines.
