South O'Brien vrs GTRA 2018

August 30, 2018

The 2018 Football season for the South O’Brien Wolverines started out with a rush on Friday. The Wolverines traveled to Greattinger to play the GTRA Titans. The game ended with a 19-6 victory for the the Wolverines.

The game started a little disappointing as the Wolverines drove down the field after taking the opening kickoff and rushed for a 10 yard touchdown run only to have it called back for a holding call. The Wolverines never recovered on this drive and were forced to give the ball up on downs.

The teams went back and forth for the rest of the first quarter with both defenses playing well and neither teams’ offenses getting any sustained drives. The second quarter the Wolverines picked up a couple first downs and were finally able to drive down the field and pick up a score. With 4:53 to go in the 2nd quarter, Reid Nelson took a handoff and went 3 yards over the right tackle for a score. Yannick Lorf attempted the extra point kick but was wide right. The Titans had one more chance at a score but were forced to punt after 3 plays.

The score at halftime was 6-0 in favor of the Wolverines. The defense kept the Titans rushing attack at bay allowing negative 5 yards rushing on 11 carries in the first half.

The third quarter looked a lot like the first half with no scoring for either team. The Wolverine defense was making it very difficult on the opposing offense. The Wolverine offense was starting to control the line of scrimmage but hadn’t put enough together for a score.

The 4th quarter proved to be more active for both teams’ offenses. The Wolverines picked up a 4th down defensive stop early in the 4th quarter but a fumble by the Wolverines gave the Titans some life. The home team picked up a first down and then on a 4th down play picked up a defensive penalty for a first down and finished the drive with a 31 yard pass play. The 2 point conversion failed so the score was tied at 6-6 with 8:53 to go in the 4th quarter.

The Wolverines offensive line started to take over. After a nice drive, Jackson Louscher was able to connect on a 14 yard pass to Zeke Lundquist to give the Wolverines the lead. A missed extra point kick made the game 12-6 with 3:15 to go.

The Wolverines picked up a 4th down stop and turnover when Matt Riedemann blitzed the B gap on 4th down and forced a fumble. The Wolverine offense put together another short drive. Jackson Louscher sneaked one over the goal line and Pedro Gray kicked the extra point. This gave the Wolverines a 19-6 lead with 48.5 seconds to go. Yannick Lorf kicked off and pinned the Titans deep and the score remained the same at the end of the game.

Jackson Loucher was 6-7 passing for 66 yards and a touchdown. Tristan Wilson had 38 carries for 145 yards. Reid Nelson finished with 70 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Sean Negus led the receivers with 3 catches for 24 yards. The Wolverine offense ended with 19 first downs and 294 total yards of offense.

Defensively the Wolverines were led by Noah Fuhrman with 4 solos and 4 assists. 3 of the solos and one of the assists were for a loss. Adam Richter had 3 solos and 3 assists with one of those being for a loss. Austin Paulsen had an interception and a 22 yard return. Noah Fuhrman and Darien Keith each had a fumble recovery. The Wolverines only allowed 7 first downs. They allowed 49 yards rushing and 110 yards passing.

It was a great way to start the season. The Wolverines had a great team effort. Next week the Wolverines travel to Sheldon. The Orabs are coming off a win against Sibley-Ocheydan and will prove to be a good test for the Wolverines.
