When the Chicks Leave the Nest

 


When my son left home a few years back, I wondered how he could possibly survive without me. I once watched that child wreck a tricycle. I hauled him to urgent care when he nearly cut his thumb off. I once came out of a meeting to at least ten missed phone calls. When I called him back, his first words were, “Don’t worry, Mom. The fire is out.”

It wasn’t as bad as it sounded; the fire had been confined to inside the microwave, but I aged ten years that day and memories like that made it very hard to believe he could carry on without me.
