A Life to a Legacy - Remembering Dan Wetherell

 


Energetic. Passionate. Intelligent. Reliable. Personable. Organized. Dedicated. Loyal. Faithful. There are so many ways to describe of Dan Wetherell, Director or General N.B. Baker Library in Sutherland. But it takes every one of those adjectives to capture the man he was.

Wetherell lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 20, 2018. Dan lived much of his young life in Peterson and Sutherland graduating from Sutherland High School in 1994. He graduated from Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. He was following the dream of his youth, to become President of the United States. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.

In 2005 Wetherell joined the United States Army and transferred to the Iowa National Guard in 2009. He served this nation until 2013. His Basic Training was completed at Fort Jackson, SC. He received training and certifications as a Quartermaster and Automated Logistical Specialist. He received his SAMS-e certification (Standard Army Maintenance Systems-enhanced) and his combat lifesaver. Dan's military tenure took him into combat in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Through is years he received at least 2 commendation medals. One was for extraordinary service during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dan served 6 years on the General N.B. Baker Library Board and accepted the director position in November 2016. During that time, Dan developed a wide range of program offerings, speakers and activities from the library. He made sure there was something for people of all ages and varied interests. He had a knack for bringing people together. His work paid off. People going into the Sutherland Library during December 2016 numbered 189. His report for December 2017 was traffic of 570 people. Connie Cody, General N.B. Baker Library board president said, "He left a legacy. The board has to figure out how to keep it going." In addition to a planned political "meet and greet" scheduled for Tuesday May 22, which he said would happen "come Hell or high water." The event has been rescheduled for Tuesday May 29 at 6:30 at the Sutherland Fire Station. Dan also had plans in the works for a cemetery walk on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. No announcements on that at press time.

Dan kept himself immersed in community activism. He was a member and current President of Sutherland Ruritan, Pear Tree House, Commercial Club, O'Brien County Cemetery Association. He was active in several Historic groups. He was the founder of "Forgotten Iowa Society Facebook page. It had over 50,000 followers, according to one report.

Dan was instrumental in organizing and executing Sutherland's offerings to bicyclists who braved the 2017 RAGBRAI gravel route, and a growing list of political forums he moderated. The footprints he left will be very hard to fill.

Services of Daniel A. Wetherell are scheduled for Saturday May 26 at 10:00 at the R.L. Johannsen Community Center in Sutherland. Reverend John Erickson, officiating.
